MLS Tickets - Donovan Ricketts Wins Week Four by Brent Warnken

The Los Angeles Galaxy may still be searching for a win in mid April, but that doesn't mean the entire team is without a reason to celebrate. Week four saw the team's star goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts was named the Major League Soccer Player of the Week. The reason for the award comes from his performance in the first Supersico between the Galaxy and Chivas USA, where the match ended in a 0-0 tie.

The performance is even more important when the fact that it was his first MLS start is taken into consideration. Throughout the game, he had to handle a barrage of shots and finished with five saves. He had an even tougher job in the final 11 minutes of the game when the Galaxy played a man down. He is the fourth such winner this season, preceded by Fredy Montero of the Seattle Sounders FC, Kasey Keller of the Sounders and Conor Casey of the Colorado Rapids. The players are chosen by a group of journalists from The North American Soccer Reporters. See your favorite player take the field with MLS tickets online.

The 6-foot 5-inch goalkeeper was raised in Montego Bay, Jamaica. He was a talented player from the beginning and caught the attention of Jamaican Clubs. Along with playing for Village United from 2002 to 2004 in his home country, he attended the University of the West Indies. He was part of Jamaica's 1998 World Cup team, but never got the chance to take the field.

In 2002, he made his debut with the Jamaican National Team in that year's World Cup Qualifier match against St. Vincent and the Grenadines, helping his team to a 1-0 win. With only six credits left before he was finished with his degree at the University of the West Indies, he was signed to play in the English Premier League with the Bolton Wanderers. On the same team was another Jamaican National Team player, Ricardo Gardner. He never played in a game for Bradford and signed later that year with Bradford City of England's League Two.

It wasn't long before Ricketts became Bradford City's starting keeper. While there, he played in over 100 different matches for Bradford City, showing himself as an adept goalie. In 2006, he was back with the Jamaican National Team for the World Cup Qualifier. In 2008, playing with the Jamaican National Team led to him no longer playing in England. When he left, there was a problem with his work permit, making the 2007-2008 season his last in the UK. The release made him return to his home country to play again for Village United.

Luckily for Ricketts, the Galaxy were in desperate need of a talented goalkeeper following the 2008 season, where they allowed 62 goals and missed the playoffs. The Galaxy signed Ricketts in December of 2008 with big hopes for the 31-year-old goalkeeper. The Galaxy will undoubtedly need more of Ricketts' skill when they are up against tough teams like the San Jose Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids in the coming weeks.
